Surveying Levels
Surveying
involves the measurement of distance, both horizontal and vertical, and
direction to determine the relative position of points above, on or beneath
the surface of the earth. It is a process of collecting information about
the earth's surface. Surveys are carried out on bodies of water such as sea, bays, harbors, rivers or lakes for determining channel depths for navigation, determining quantities of bottom excavations, location of navigation hazards such as rocks, sand bars etc. and navigation aids, monitoring of areas subject to erosion or silting and positioning offshore structures. In addition, the surveys to clearly show the separation of water and land.
Surveying is also done to find out the mean sea level, that is the average level of the ocean surface halfway between the highest and lowest levels recorded and the elevations of the sea, i.e , the height of a feature above mean sea level. There are many different technologies used in surveying and many different types of surveys, but regardless of its features, the basics remain the same.
